A citizen centre in Athens

Athens, Greece

Located in the path to arrive to the Parthenon, Athens’ most imponent and important cultural attraction, this building aims to focus on the Athens’ citizens. These streets are full of stories and potential, from the storytellers to the artisans, and their voice must be heard to keep the sense of community alive.

The design focus on not interrupting the circular and sinuous path that leads people to the Parthenon, making the small cultural centre part of the experience. The roof is made of brise-soleil that are controlled mechanically, allowing to control the quantity of light that will come inside the building accordingly to the hour of the day, period of the year and the needs inside the activities developed inside. The cross-ventilation from one side to the other allows fresh air and no need for air conditioning.

The columns used to roof sustain are a direct reference to the Parthenon’s columns. The use of white colour is a reference to local architecture, making the small cultural centre part of the daily life of Athens’ citizens and a site specific architecture.
